Born 1957, in New Delhi, Kanchan studied art at Weisensee Kunst Hochschule in Berlin (1975), Delhi College of Art, New Delhi (1976-81), Guest student in Printmaking department in Santiago, Chile (1980-81 ) and was on Fellowship at Ecole National Des Beaux Arts, Paris (1984-85)
Initially, she worked in the medium of Printmaking (Etching, Lithography and woodcut). She gradually moved on to Painting and later to Mixed Media also indulging in video art and assemblages.
Her work is vibrant and refreshing, and she uses mixed media in a happy combination of edgy and conventional modes. Brightly painted, monumental and bedecked with sequins, silver leaf and beads, Her works celebrate the fertile, the erotic and the sensuousness of the female form. Using eclectic material - paper bits, magazine snippets, sequins, laces - it's all a happy playground for her and in the end produces a form that is thought-provoking and beautifully layered.
Kanchan’s global recognition is mirrored by the range of global collections that acquired her works.
