Born 1974 at Burla in 0rissa, Pratul Dash did his graduation in painting from B.K College of Arts & Crafts at Bhubaneswar and his Master’s Degree in painting from the College of Art in Delhi. This was followed by a UNIDEE residency at Cittadelarte in Italy, turning his interest in video art into a serious pursuit. Pratul’s canvases present over-powering images of construction sites and grids occasionally with a lone man or creature or object precariously holding on to or perched up a scaffold or lurking behind or above another difficult locale. It makes an interesting study of contemporary metro culture where the migrant and the marginalized have to struggle for their bare existence as those, who build the city to make life easy for the urban rich, themselves have no shelter or place to subsist or hide. Innovative in spirit, his repertoire includes film, video, digital art, collage, mixed media, installations and site specific work besides paintings on paper and canvas. He is currently setting up a platform laboratory for creative people to work for and with the society. Winner of the Inlaks scholarship and M.F. Hussain Award at the art college in Delhi and annual award at Bhubaneswar besides others, his work has been exhibited in several solo and group shows at Delhi, Bhubaneswar, Mumbai, Kolkata, Nepal, Italy and London and is held in important private and public collections including the NGMA in Delhi, LKA Bhubaneswar and Delhi, Hindustan Lever and Gandhi Smriti Darsan. Pratul lives in Delhi and works from his studio in the city.
