Born 1960, Sunil Gawde well known for his earlier abstract and minimalist work has gradually shifted his focus to sculpture and installations that connect painted images with objects of daily use in life. Gawde creates his image using the textural play of gloss and matte surfaces to transform many of his painted forms into low-relief sculptures with light and shadow. His paintings develop from precisely calibrated arcs, bold strokes of roller and scraper-blade: the edge, always his primary device. His recent highly acclaimed solo exhibition of sculptural installations ‘blind bulb etc…’ was based on concepts around form and movement and their interface with each other and the viewer. Trained at the JJ School of Art in Mumbai and Glasgow School of Art in the UK, he has had ten solo shows and over 25 group exhibitions in India, Britain, Germany and Bangladesh and his work is held in many private and public collections in India and abroad.
